Dick Morris has reported twice this week that John McCain's campaign is in trouble. He refuses to go to the new media to court voters. He wants to stay with the media elite. He is top heavy with advisors. His campaign contributions have all but dried up. He seems to be showing his age when confronted with controversial issues on the news shows.
As an Arizonan, I am glad that he is not doing well. John McCain has been good and bad over the years. When things are going well, he will sometimes jump ship just to see his name in lights as a maverick. When the chips are down, you cannot count on John McCain to do the right thing. He is always trying to work out some compromise where the conservatives give up everything and the liberals give up nothing.
An example of this behavior is when the judges needed to be confirmed, he formed his gang of 14. The gang of 14 made sure that judges had to have the 60 vote level to be confirmed instead of the Constitutionally mandated 51 votes. He did get some controversial judges confirmed easily, but they would have been confirmed any way. He stopped the Senate from ruling that judges had to have the 51 vote level to be confirmed. As a result, we have a backlog of judges waiting to be confirmed that would easily get over 51 votes. They just cannot get to 60 votes because of Democrat stupidity.
That kind of activity when the chips are down makes him unreliable. When the chips are down and the country is in danger, can we count on him to make the right choice? I am not so sure. I have voted for John McCain many times. At first, because he was exactly what a Republican should be. But lately, because he was better than the alternative Democrat. Of course my dog would have been better than any of the Democrat Senate candidates in the last 20 years. At least my dog is loyal. You cannot say that for many Democrat candidates these days.
Since John McCain is showing signs of failing, there are two candidates left. Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney. Rudy Giuliani is the unquestioned leader when it comes to the war on Islamo-Fascism. Mitt Romney is the unquestioned leader when talking about social issues. Mitt Romney would be strong on national defense. He just has not had a chance to show it yet. Rudy Giuliani says he would appoint judges that will follow the law, not write it. I know Mitt Romney will do that.
If I voted strictly on national defense, Rudy Giuliani would win. But you cannot vote strictly on national defense. National defense is very important, probably THE most important issue. But, judges are the second most important issue and I am not sure I can trust Rudy Giuliani on that issue. Why would he appoint judges that did not believe as he did? That does not make sense. In my opinion, he would be tempted to pick a judge that agreed with him on the issues over one that did not agree with him. That would put another activist judge on the Supreme Court or other Federal court. That would be a disaster. I am sure that Mitt Romney will select people that will follow the Constitution. He needs to persuade people that he is strong on national defense. But that will come in time. As I see it, a conservative has to vote for Mitt Romney over Rudy Giuliani. Mitt Romney will be a safer alternative when looking at the entire candidate. I am sure that Mitt is honest, true, chaste, benevolent, and does good to all men. Mitt Romney almost looks too good to be true.
