The Democrats held their last debate of the primary season last night. Mrs. Clinton and Barack Obama were asked questions by two “reporters” from ABC News. Something must have been in the water, the reporters actually asked a couple of real questions to these candidates. When they did, the candidates looked at them like the world had come to an end. The candidate then stumbled around for a while searching for something like an answer. When one finally came, it was lame at best. It showed how totally unprepared for the real world these two phonies are.
Barack Obama was asked about a former member of the Weathermen, a terrorist group from the 1970’s. Barack had served on a board with this individual for a few years and held campaign events in this person’s home. George Stephanopoulos asked Mr. Obama about Mr. Ayres, the Weatherman, who has stated that he, did not do enough terrorist acts in the 1970’s as a member of the Weathermen. Obama basically said that Mr. Ayres had not endorsed him. Holding a campaign event at your house is close enough to an endorsement as far as I can see. Barack then stated that he did not agree with the opinions of Mr. Ayres. Barack also said that he also knew Senator Dr. Coburn from Oklahoma. Senator Coburn has suggested that those who perform abortions should be tried for murder. Barack said that Senator Coburn’s opinion and that of Mr. Ayres were equal. They are not equal as Mr. Ayres is a terrorist and belonged to a group that killed people. Senator Coburn is not a terrorist and has never belonged to any group that has killed anyone. Barack really showed the deer in the headlights problem with that question.
Mrs. Clinton tried to really nail Obama with the Ayres question. The problem is that her hands are probably less clean than those of Obama. Her husband pardoned terrorists to win votes for her in New York. She did nail him with the Ayres question, but also put a nail in her coffin with the implication of cozying up to terrorists to gain votes.
All in all, Mrs. Clinton looked the best in the debate last night. It was not so much that she won the debate; it was more that Barack Obama lost the debate. In the debate, he looked lost without the crutch of the teleprompter and a prepared speech. He floundered around and looked like someone completely out of his element. She also looked bad, but she at least did not look completely lost. She looked like she was sucking on lemons all night, but at least she was prepared. He looked like he walked into the debate without any preparation. It was as though he expected everyone to bow down and worship at his feet instead of asking him tough questions. The questions were not really that tough. They were merely the most obvious questions to ask a candidate running for President. They were on topic and germane.
Looking at this debate, the Super Delegates have to be looking at each other and saying to themselves, “How did we get in this situation?” The Democrats are stuck with two candidates that have tremendous flaws. They are so far to the left that they will be completely unable to connect to the American voters. The myth of Barack Obama has been completely destroyed. There was a time when he looked unstoppable. Now, he looks like totally damaged goods. He got roughed up by little blows. If he had been facing a Republican that had big differences, there would have been terrific blows. Mrs. Clinton stands on almost exactly the same ground on the issues. They are just fighting over whom best can deliver the goods. They both got roughed up just talking about who can deliver the message. When they have to fight over the message, they will really have problems holding their own. They are in indefensible positions and they know it.
These next few months will be interesting in the Democrat party. The party is in disarray. They have two candidates that would have trouble being elected dog catcher in any town in America. Neither candidate gives off an air of confidence. Neither one seems ready to act as a Commander in Chief. Both are acting like school girls in a petty fight over hair ribbons. What the Democrats need to do is choose someone with real standing. Unfortunately, almost all of those people are Republicans.
The Democrats are looking at a loss on the order of a George McGovern in 1972. That was a total defeat of monumental size. It may be a bad year to be a Democrat. That is good for the country.
