New border security activities announced

Homeland Security and the Department of Defense announced yesterday that the National Guard troops on the border will be removed. They will be replaced by air surveillance vehicles, most likely drones of some type. These drones will have the capability to see over the horizon and at night. They will be better than an actual guard with binoculars.

On the surface, this sounds like a decent plan. We will be able to identify incoming illegal aliens much faster and with more accuracy than ever before. That is the positive. The negative is that by reducing the military presence on the border you make it more difficult for the Border Patrol to actually catch the illegals they see. Since border security involves both finding and catching the people attempting to come here illegally, this plan makes little sense.

On Sharpe in the Morning on KFYI, the producer voiced his opinion that this will allow the Obama administration to identify the new voters coming into the country. His thought is that this removal of troops to add surveillance drones is just a ploy to open the border. It is well known that Democrats use illegal aliens to secure additional votes during elections. They put illegals and homeless on buses and take them to polling places to vote (often). This was well documented during the first election of Senator Landrieu of Louisiana.

Republicans like the illegals to come into the country so they have a supply of cheap labor. This has also been documented.

If we are going to have a country, we need to secure the border first. Without a secure border, we have no control over who is here. Not securing the border allows criminals and terrorists to enter our country and create havoc in our cities. That is how the Mexican Drug Cartels operate so openly in the US. They use the lack of interdiction of illegals to build up groups to sell drugs. Securing the border would greatly hamper the drug cartels from operating inside the US.

One criticism of people that are against illegal entry into the US is that we are against immigration. That could not be further from the truth. My grandfather and grandmother on my mother’s side both immigrated to the US. My mother is a first generation American. But, my grandparents came here legally. I would have no problem with the people coming here illegally, if they were doing so legally. Breaking the law is wrong. Following the law and coming here legally is the right way to come here. There is no excuse for ever breaking the law.

My thoughts on this change at the border are that it is a way to reduce enforcement efforts while claiming that you are not. On the surface this sounds great. You have an improved ability to spot people coming here illegally. But, there was no announced plan to improve interdiction. It is great to identify that people are coming and where, but if you don’t capture them why put out the effort to identify them at all? This just sounds like an election year ploy to sound tough while actually being weak.
