Yesterday the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office put out a press release that was disturbing, but not unexpected. The press release said that the MCSO had stopped a vehicle with 12 illegal aliens in it in the northern part of the county. They arrested 6 of them under state human smuggling laws that were a felony. The other six could not be arrested under the felony laws, so the MCSO called ICE. When they had ICE on the phone they explained the situation and asked ICE to take custody of the prisoners. This has been common practice between MCSO and ICE for at least 8 years, probably more. ICE refused the prisoners because they had a memo telling them not to cooperate with the MCSO. Border Control was then contacted and the 6 illegal aliens were transferred to them.
After the blistering press conference last week from the Department of Justice, I expected something like this. The DOJ is under fire for Operation Fast and Furious. Things are so bad for them that they have had to resort to calling everyone questioning them as racists. If that is your only defense, you are in big trouble because being called a racist has little meaning any more. It is used so often and for times when the person is obviously not a racist that the term means almost nothing any more. The DOJ has to deflect criticism and they decided to attack the “nation’s toughest Sheriff”, Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County.
In the report that came out last week, there were no specifics on what the MCSO did or was doing that was a problem. The report just said that the MCSO was discriminating and they better stop. The Maricopa County Attorney wrote the DOJ and said he needed specifics. If there were crimes committed, he would prosecute. If there were no crimes, he wanted to know that too. My guess is the people filling out the report had a mindset that the MCSO was discriminating and would only consider things that supported their argument. They most likely have a very thin list of supposed violations. When those come to light, the DOJ will be made to look like fools. It is in the best interest of the DOJ to keep the information they have under wraps as long as possible so that they can demigod the situation as long as possible. Their hope is that by slandering Sheriff Joe, they will cause his support to diminish and he will either resign or be defeated in 2012.
Now that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has weighed in on the matter, things are becoming clearer. If they had any real evidence against Sheriff Joe, they would have gone after him tooth and nail. Because their “evidence” is shaky at best and most likely hearsay, they don’t dare really divulge it or prosecute. They just slander and hope that is enough. They were not counting on Bill Montgomery. Bill Montgomery is making them put up or shut up.
DOJ and DHS are very political organizations right now. Neither is supposed to be political at all. Law enforcement is supposed to be apolitical. When I was in law enforcement, things were non-political. Now, everything is becoming political. That is a shame. We need to end these political games and get back to getting the bad guys. But, as long as Obama is in the White House and Eric Holder is at the DOJ politics remains supreme in law enforcement. Janet Napolitano is always looking for ways to get back at Sheriff Joe for making her look bad when she was governor of Arizona. So, that is why she is participating in this farce. Unfortunately for them, Sheriff Joe will be stronger than ever after they have been shown to be the frauds they truly are.
