Defeatism wins again?

The Senate is considering a non-binding resolution against the war on Terror. It looks like many Republicans, the 11/7 Republicans as Dean Barrett calls them, will vote for the resolution. That will insure passage. It will make the US look foolish in the eyes of the world. I know the resolution is non-binding, but it just looks bad.

We are pinning our hopes on John McCain to pull one out of his hat for us. He has managed to pull one out of the hat to stab us in the back many times. Maybe he can actually accomplish some good. I doubt that he has the energy to do it. I doubt that he will even attempt to do it unless he is sure of winning. John McCain is nothing if not a weasel these past few years. He has to be on the winning side.

If he wants to be President, he has to pull the fat out of the fire. I just doubt that he has the pull to do it. He does not have the credibility that the main stream media seem to think that he has. He is seen as a maverick. Mavericks cannot lead in times of crisis. They are seen as too ephemeral to lead in times of crisis. They can lead in the good times, just not the tough times.

There really is no other Republican that wants to be President that could pull off the defeat of this measure. For this measure to pass will send a message to Al Qaeda that they are winning. Al Qaeda will have to wait just a little while longer and we will collapse like he paper tiger bin Laden said we were 15 years ago. We cannot let this happen. Unfortunately, we have to work through a Democrat congress and they surrendered years ago. I do not hold out much hope for the good guys on this one.

Hillary Announces, Ho Hum

Hillary Clinton announced the formation of the committee to help get her nominated for President. Many experts say that her announcement at this time is in response to Barak Obama. He is getting a lot of press and is having a lot of movement in the polls. She needs to move to counter that action.

That Hillary was going to announce was a fore gone conclusion. That the announcement is interestiing, only to the main stream media. Her announcement and that of Obama have been touted highly by the main stream media as if it was something important. Both of them are political light weights. Neither has had any executive experience running anything. Hillary did run Bill's health care committee and truly botched that one big time.

In running for President, you cannot say you have more experience. Saying that means that you are older. Being older means you are not a "fresh" face in the race. Part of being successful in running for President is being a "fresh" face. That means that we get the less experienced person for the job. Also, all experience is not equal. Experience as an executive that has run a state or a company is preferable to that of a legislator. The skill set to be President is similar to that of being a governor or a chief executive of a company. The skill set to be a legislator has nothing in common with that of President. That does not mean that legislators cannot make good presidents. It just means if you want to judge experience being a governor or a chief executive of a company is preferable to being a Senator or a Representative.

Of the announced candidates and those that are expected to announce in the near future, the Republican candidates generally have more experience that counts than do Democrats. The Republican candidates have generally been governors and chief executives of companies. They have even been legislators longer than the Democrat candidates.

It will be interesting to see how all this plays out in the next two years. The main stream media will be building up the losers in the Democrat party. The winners in the Republican party will be talked down to try to defeat them.

Global Warming Fanatics

We have a report that a member of the American Meterological Society is proposing that any person that does not believe in global warming be decertified by the organization. That is getting pretty serious about something with no evidence. The person advocating this position is obviously a liberal. Liberals think their position is the only sane position. Therefore, anyone not subscribing to that position is obviously making a mistake or worse.

Liberals fail to take into account that someone may actually hold a differing opinion. This is usually not a problem as liberals tend not to mix too much with conservatives. It does cause a problem when the two groups do have to interact. Conservatives usually acknowledge that people can disagree. Holding that position allows them to accept the fact that people will disagree with them  Liberals, on the other hand, do not hold that position. They feel everyone does agree with them. They are constantly surprised when someone actually disagrees with them. They usually do not take the disagreements with a very good attitude.

I work at a college. I have to tread very lightly when discussing my positions on global warming and other environmental issues. My approach is to tell my students that I am challenging them to think. I do not expect them to agree with me and I want them to support whatever position they take with scientific facts. This latter idea will entirely fluster the liberals. They have no facts to back up their positions on global warming.

I am teaching a class in ecology this semester. I am having fun with the students. I wrote some challenging questions on their discussion boards in the class. I told the students that the questions were there to challenge them. The questions need to be answered with scientific facts if they are available. It will be interesting to see how well the students in the class handle the challenge.

The thing I am trying to do is to educate my students in alternate ideas about the environment. If they can acknowledge that there are alternate possibilities out there, they have a chance to become open minded. That will be good to see. I would love to leave a few open minded students behind. Their flustering of teachers in the future would be interesting to see.

Obamamania & Hillary

Barak Obama is the hottest political person in the main stream media. He is on all the talk shows and in all the newspapers. There was a poll recently of Democrat candidates and he was in a statistical dead heat with the front runner, Hillary.

I have seen articles about how team Clinton is in a state of panic. They are unable, at this time, to stop Obamamania. It is making Hillary Clinton look beatable. Her polls have dropped as his have surged. No matter what she does, she comes off looking like the second fiddle.  In one article I read, it made an analogy with the girl in the poodle skirt in high school that has everything set up to be class president. Then along comes the transfer student that has everyone going goo-goo eyes. The steam would be coming out of the girl with the poodle skirt's eyes with every step. All she had worked for would be overtaken by someone who did not have to work for it at all. Oh, the inhumanity of it all!

Team Clinton is probably getting the sharks ready for the attack. When it is time, they will attack Obama with a vengeance. When they are through with him, even his own mother would not vote for him. They do not just go out to defeat an opponent. They go out to destroy an opponent. Obama seems to be a political neophyte. That would put him at a distinct disadvantage when playing the particularly difficult hard ball politics played by team Clinton. In a way, I feel sorry for Obama. He has no idea what he is about to face. He is in the good times now. Wait until the attack dogs get through. He will wonder what hit him.

Of course, I could be wrong about this. He is from Illinois. They do have a reputation of playing hard ball in Illinois. He may be ready for anything Hillary and team Clinton can put up against him. If he is, then he is the real deal and will be difficult to beat in November 2008.

My gut feeling is that Obama will be swamped by team Clinton. They have too many different ways to attack for him to be able to fend off all of them. They will be able to find pictures of Obama with anybody, including Teddy Roosevelt. Photoshop can do wonders with pictures nowadays. The article I read speculated that he would be pictured with a hooker, maybe even a dead hooker. That would kill a campaign quicker than you could say, Jack Robinson.

Global Warming Again?

This is an idea I thought I beat down in my first attempt at writing in my blog. The temperature of the earth has increased one degree centigrade since 1900. If we continued having a temperature increase at that rate, it would take around 1000 years to make any real difference to the world. We would start to see things start to happen in 500 years, but they would be mild.

The main reason the temperature has increased is that the sun has been more active these past 20 years. That would account for some of the temperature rise. Most of the temperature rise took place prior to 1940. Since 1990, the temperature has not increased at all.

The temperature is still not as warm as it was from 850 to 1100 AD. During that time, there was a colony in Greenland that had around 20,000 people living in it. They had primitive technology and had a good living. They must have had a good living as the colony grew during most of that time period. We could not establish a colony in that area of Greenland using that technology and have anywhere near that number of people. Most of them would starve within the first year. It was also warm around the year 0. there was a 100-200 year period of warm temperatures and resulting crop increases. Both of those were not caused by human greenhouse emissions.

Since the entire global warming scare is just that, a scare, we should disregard it. Unfortunately, powerful people believe that global warming exists. They will not listen to logic or to scientific facts. They insist that everyone bow down at the altar of global warming. Two Senators sent a letter to an oil company threatening them to not support people working on research that does not support global warming. The threats have even gotten to President Bush. The word is out that he will acknowledge that global warming exists in the State of the Union speech next week. That will be a major victory for the believers. They will have the most powerful person on earth acknowledging that they are right.

When you hear people talk about global warming, you hear them couch it in words that have meaning like a church. People in a church talking about believing and faith. People that believe in global warming talk just like that. People that do not believe in global warming talk in scientific terms and use scientific information to back up their arguments. People that believe in global warming just say, " everyone believes global warming exists" and the argument ends.

I am afraid we are in for a bumpy road ahead. The global warming crowd is getting stronger. The people that do not believe in global warming are being forced to believe. I refuse to be forced to believe in a false idea. When there is no evidence to support an argument, I cannot support it. I am too much of a scientist to fall for the,"everyone believes" argument. I want to see facts on the table. One degree in over 100 years, is nothing to worry about in my lifetime or the lifetime of anyone living on this planet at this time. It will not even be a problem for the grandchildren of anyone living on the planet at this time. I am talking about the grandchildren of my grandchildren that are less than one year old.

Fortunately for me, I will not be around for all of the shouting. I am 58 years old and can only expect to live 20-30 more years. I can get in on the argument, but I will not have to pay the price of all this insanity.

Semester Beginnings

Today starts the beginning of a new semester. This semester I teach BIO 160 and 182. It is the first time I have not taught BIO 156 since the fall of 2002. It will be really different. I have gotten used to telling a semester by what labs are being taught. I will have to revise that for this semester.

Our college is in the midst of a decline in enrollment. All the colleges in the district are struggling with enrollment problems this year. Yet, even with the decline in enrollment we have found a way to increase our enrollment in Biology. We are offering a one year only position for next year. The position will teach courses that we are confident will fill. They are courses that are required for people that want to become nurses. Nurses are in short supply all over the US and particularly in the Phoenix area. There are lots of people that want to become nurses.  The thinking is that the people will take the required courses with us. They will then take other courses on campus that semester. That should impact enrollment and increase the student levels.

It is a bold approach to solving the enrollment problem. The usual approach is to try to find courses people want and then offer them. We have some courses people want. We fill all that we currently offer. We have decided to offer more. The theory says that those courses should fill as well.

When students take one course at a campus, they usually take more than one course that same semester from that campus. We should see an enrollment increase in other courses on campus. The results will be more diffuse as the students will take different courses with our Biology courses. That will make the other increases hard to quantify. But the total for the campus should show the increase.

If this works, we can then ask that the position be made permanent as the increase in enrollment campus wide will justify the position. We are not due to get another position until 2011. I think this might be our chance to get one much sooner than that. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Are we serious about Life?

When I turn on the TV, I am touched by the image that we are not serious. The top shows seem to be things like American Idol. That is nothing but fluff. People go on that show in the hope that they become famous and make millions. Most end up on that show making fools of themselves. Why would anyone go on a TV show to make a fool of themselves. I am baffled by the mindset that allows someone to do that to themselves.

We are in the middle of a war for our very survival. The Islamo-fascists want us converted to Islam or dead. Since most of us are not going to convert to Islam voluntarily, that means they want us dead. To have that sort of a problem looking us in the face it is hard to understand the fluff that goes on in American entertainment. I understand that we have to have entertainment. We need to get away from our worries and cares. The problem I see in front of me is that we have become obsessed with entertainment. We are becoming like the ancient Romans just prior to their fall.

Ancient Rome built itself up into a great culture. As the culture grew, the need for entertainment grew. The entertainment became more and more important to the people. People were obsessed with entertainment to get away from the realities of life. When the Celtic people invaded, they were able to march into Rome itself. The people had lost the ability to defend themselves. Are we becoming like those ancient Romans?

Our army is the best in the world. There is no force that can stand and win against us, unless we let them. That is what I see happening in Iraq. We have tied our troops up in knots with rules of engagement. When we find the enemy, we are more concerned with protecting civilians than killing the enemy. If we allow our soldiers to do their jobs, they could finish in Iraq within two months. They could finish off Iran and Syria before the end of the year. But, we will not let them loose. We are so afraid of what the liberals will think.

I wonder if America has the will to survive. The culture seems to be obsessed with entertainment. I wonder if my grandchildren or great grandchildren will even have an America to live in when they are my age. The Islamo-fascists are deadly serious. We are not serious. Most Americans do not believe that we are in a war. Most Americans think that if we are nice to the Islamo-fascists they will be nice to us. That could not be further from the truth. We have to fight. We have to win. We cannot fail. The big question is: how do we get people to understand that we are in a real war? What will it take to wake up the American people? Do thousands or even millions have to die before we wake up? I hope I am wrong. I hope that everyone understands and I am just misunderstanding. I fear I am right.

Iranian Detainees

Just before President Bush spoke the other night, he authorized a raid on a building owned by Iran. The Marines that made the raid detained six Iranians and lots of papers and computer equipment. The Iranians claimed the building was an embassy. The US claims it was just another building.

It was good to make a move against the Iranians. They have gotten away with killing our men and women and financing others to do the same. It was time to catch them in the act of doing just that. When we translate and decode all of the information taken in the raid, we will have a better idea of exactly what Iran is up to in Iraq. That information is invaluable to the President and others planning our national security. It is of no use to the Democrats. They surrendered months or years ago.

When we know exactly what is what, we can plan exactly what responses to make. This information will provide us information about more than just what is going on in Iraq. It should also give good information about what is going on in Iran. We need good information about what is going on in Iran. This will give us some good data. It will be unfiltered through spies. It will have to be interpreted. I just hope that those doing the interpreting will do it right. We cannot afford mistakes.

Whoever came up with this idea deserves a medal. The plan is a winner on every front. Even if we have to give the Iranians back (doubtful), we still win from the information obtained. This shows me that President Bush is serious about winning in Iraq and the war on Islamo-fascism. I hope the next President is as committed to victory as President Bush. Of course, saying that means no Democrat can meet that test. All the Democrats that can be nominated will have surrendered. That means the next President has to be a Republican.

Democrat Opposition to President

The Democrats are none too happy about the President's speech. They do not want to see more troops sent to Iraq. They want the troops brought home. It was not too long ago that the Democrats thought they needed to sound like hawks. They were saying that we needed more troops in Iraq. We could not complete our mission without a increase in the number of troops in Iraq. Today, that has all changed for the worse.

There is one thing you can count on in these times. That is that the Democrat party will be against anything that will help the United States win the war against Islamo-fascism. The Democrats want George Bush to look so bad that they are willing to have America defeated in a war. That position is insane. If you are an American and claim to be a patriot, you have to want the US to win any war. The Democrats do not want us to win.

The most insane portion of the whole affair is that the American public is trusting the Democrats to find a way to win the war against Islamo-fascists. How can someone who wants us to lose find a way to win? They have no reason to look for any way to win. Their primary supporters want us to lose. The people that give them money to run campaigns want us to lose. It is the average American voter that was fooled in the voting booth. The average voter thought there was no difference between the two parties. How wrong can they be?

The election was only two months ago and already we see the Democrats trying to help us lose. I am just sick about how things are working out with this congress. We can do better than this. Unfortunately, we are stuck with these idiots for the next two years.

President's speech

This evening, President Bush gave a speech about the War on Terror. In the speech, he discussed increasing our commitment to the Iraq portion of that war by over 21,000 troops. These troops would be used to restore order in Bagdad.

Any country that is trying to become independent has to have a secure capitol city. Right now, Bagdad is not a secure city. There are killings and bombings going on all the time by terrorists. It is important that we restore order to Bagdad. We can do that by increasing our presence in the city and increasing the Iraqi military presence in the city.

Just increasing our military presence in the city will not restore order. We have to take a more aggressive stance toward the terrorists that are in Bagdad. This means taking off some of the chains that have restricted our military from truly doing its job these past couple of years. We need to play the game to win. We cannot play the game to be PC. We have to take the stance that we are going to be the winners. If there are innocents killed while pursuing the terrorists, so be it. We do not want to kill civilians. We are not targeting civilians. It is just sometimes difficult to tell the difference between a civilian and a terrorist until it is too late.

We need to allow our troops to seek out and destroy the terrorists wherever they are. We should be attacking them 24 hours a day. We should not be giving the terrorists any breaks in this battle. We should give ourselves all the advantages. We should make the terrorists life a living hell. We should make them either give up or die. Seek them out and destroy them should be all our troops have to worry about. They should not have to worry about who did they kill. As long as they had any reason to suspect the people were terrorists, they should be able to kill them. No questions should be asked and no mercy given to them. I want the terrorists to worry about their lives 24 hours a day. That will sap morale and make our job easier.

I endorse the goals the President set forth. The country needs to get behind him and support our troops. The Democrats want to surrender. This surge in troops will not sit well with them. If this works as well as it can, the Democrats will have supported the wrong horse again. They are already screaming that the President is right and they will not stand for it. The Democrats only look good when the country looks bad. That is terrible. I support the US. I want what is best for the US. I cannot support any Democrat that does not support our country. Right now, that is almost 100% of the Democrats that hold elected leadership positions.

Illegal Immigrants

On Monday, we had our first meeting of the semester. At the meeting, our college president discussed some of the implications of the elections. The biggest was prop. 300. Prop. 300 denies benefits to anyone that cannot document that they are here in Arizona legally. The benefits that impact the college are that we have to charge out of state tuition to any person who is in the United States illegally.

Since my college is located in a part of town that is largely black and hispanic, our enrollment is largely black and hispanic. Many of the hispanic students have been undocumented aliens. Many of these undocumented aliens are children of people who came here illegally. They have lived their entire known life in the US. They went through school in Arizona. In the past, we treated these students the same as any other Arizona resident. With prop. 300, these students now become out of state students.

Our college president made a political statement during the meeting. He said that he did not agree with prop. 30. He felt that things were fine as they had been. In my opinion, he was talking about enrollment issues. With prop. 300, our enrollment has dropped. If our enrollment continues this drop, we will have to sustain budget cuts. My college is rather small. Our FTSE is 1807. That means we have the equivalent of 1807 full time students on campus. Since most of our students are part-time, our actual enrollment is above the FTSE level.

The actual drop this semester is only about 50 FTSE. That translates to a lot of students when you figure the part-time enrollment situation of most of our students. If we cannot bring our enrollment up, we stand to lose about $800,000 out of a budget of about $26 million. That is a pretty significant amount. Since I am trying to get hired on full time, a budget cut is not good. I need a budget increase to have any chance at getting hired on at the college. I hope we can figure something out and quickly.

Hillary, Obama or Edwards?

There are three main Democrat candidates for President. Hillary Clinton has the money and star power. Obama only has star power. Edwards has experience in the previous campaign.

From my perch in Arizona, I see Edwards as being a pretender. He earned his millions using junk science in court cases. His claim to fame was class action suits against doctors for causing birth defects. The birth defects were caused by the genetics of the victim or the actions of the victim. The doctor just happened to deliver a less than perfect baby. He would sue and get the doctor to settle. He is a real peach of a guy. He is obviously not Presidential material. Given the sad state of the Democrat party, he has a real shot.

Obama is a pretty face being paraded out by the media. He stands for nothing. He has done nothing. He has done cocaine while in college. His biggest advantage, he is black. If he was white, he would fade to nothing in a few weeks. Being black will keep him in the running much longer than he otherwise should be.

Hillary has the biggest pot of money. She has the Democrat machine. She has star power being female. The Presidential candidacy is hers to lose. She would also make the worst President. She is a confirmed Socialist. If she were elected, we may not have a country by the time she would be finished. A lot of people would lose their lives. Many would lose theirs by her minions. Many would lose theirs by her inaction to protect US interests. Many would lose theirs fighting Muslim extremists in the streets of the US. I guess the only good thing would be, population growth would end under her watch. I hope people wake up to the danger that she poses. I see no signs of that happening. That scares me for the future of the country that I love. I have heard rumors that the church members would have to save the country with the constitution hanging by a thread. This may be the thing that story was talking about. I always discounted that story.

My guess is that Hillary gets the nomination for President. She will pick Obama for vice. That would be a difficult ticket to beat. But, beat it we must.

Vacation to Texas

Last night, I wrote a post about our trip to Texas. When I got finished, I clicked on spell check and Internet Explorer crashed losing all of the data. I got frustrated and went to bed. This is my second attempt to give my impressions.

On the trip out, we stopped in San Antonio and visited Sea World and The Alamo. We visited Sea World because of my 7 year old granddaughter. Last spring we visited Sea World in San Diego. In comparing the two Sea Worlds, we preferred San Diego. The reason is that San Diego had more things to see and less rides. San Antonio had more rides and less to see. It took us almost two full days to see everything in San Diego and only one in San Antonio. One big difference was the Shamu show. In San Antonio, the show was multimedia and relied on split second timing. In San Diego, the show was more on the animals and was paced for the animals benefit.

The next day we went to see the Alamo. Being from the west, I have not had many chances to see in person where historic events took place. For me, the experience was moving. After spending a few hours at the Alamo, we went to the Riverview mall across the street and saw the IMax movie, "The Alamo". After seeing the Alamo in person, the movie made more of a personal statement. After the movie we went on a boat tour of the river area. The experience was great. If I ever get back to San Antonio, we will be sure to do this again.

After San Antonio, we went up to Killeen and helped my daughter, her husband and new born son get ready to move. We packed up a trailer and left Killeen. We could not leave until 1 pm on Jan. 2. The court house opened at one and closed again at 4:45 pm. That was really strange. We traveled until late and spent the night in Fort Stockton. During the night, it rained. The next morning we had to stop about 120 miles from El Paso because of a 10 vehicle accident with two deaths. The estimate was 1-2 hours before the road would be open. After an hour, a trucker told me it would be another 2-3 hours before I-10 would be open. He was going to take a couple of back roads to get to El Paso. We decided to do likewise. That took us another 3 hours to get to El Paso. We got home around 9 pm.

Texas was almost like being in a strange country. For example, when changing freeways, I am used to changing from one to the other directly. In Texas, we had to travel on surface streets to change freeways. Another strange thing was where they placed their signs to turn. I am used to the signs for a turn to be placed just before the turn. In Texas, they are placed just after the turn. That caused some wrong turns on the trip. Their traffic lights are also horizontal, not vertical. They do have some that are vertical, but very few. That took a little getting used to, but was not a problem.

We are home now and posts will resume on a regular basis. Hope your holiday was good to you.

Christmas Eve

Today is Christmas Eve. It is early morning and all is still quiet in the Revie household. All is not quiet in the world. Hugh Hewitt is reporting about a war in Ethiopia. On the radio this morning, I heard a person say that you can take a globe and spin it. Then put your finger on the globe and any country you land on will be involved in some sort of conflict. There is definitely peace on earth.

Christ came over 2000 years ago to bring people closer to God. By bringing people closer to God, peace would be possible on earth. We have failed miserably in that goal. We can bring the peace to ourselves, which I believe to be the real goal. By following Christ's plan, we can achieve peace on earth for ourselves. It does not mean there will be an absence of problems. It means that by living how Christ wants you to live, you can know true salvation. That knowledge will bring you the peace that is talked about when they say, peace on earth.

Today in my home, there will be lots of family. Everyone is coming over for Christmas Eve dinner and present opening. Those of us living in our home will open the rest of the presents on Christmas day. Our Christmas Eve dinner is Lasagna. My wife makes the best Lasagna in the world. Everyone who has ever tasted it agrees. Missionaries who have had it will request it before they get transferred out of the area.

After Christmas, my wife and I are going to Texas to pick up my youngest daughter. She moved to Texas a year ago and has decided that Arizona is home. On the trip, I will probably not be able to do any blogging. So, I will post on Christmas and then not again until January 4.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Look at the Person

We have a number of people that are running for President of the United States. All of them think they are qualified to be President. All of them think they should be President. Only one will be the next President. Who will that be? We do not know the answer to that question at this time.

Looking at the candidates you have to look at the person and where they stand on the issues. As a conservative first, I lean toward the conservative candidates and away from the liberal ones.

As a social conservative, I believe that abortion is wrong. A candidate that supports abortion would not get my vote, unless both major candidates supported abortion. Looking at the candiates, that would leave only Mitt Romney and John McCain as the only major candidates that support the rights of the unborn.

Next, I am also a fiscal conservative. Looking at the candidates, Mitt Romney, John McCain and Rudy Giulani would qualify. John McCain is the weakest of the three in this category.

As a patriot, I support the war against Islamo-fascism. Mitt Romney, John McCain and Rudy Giuliani all qualify in spades in this category. All have strong records in supporting the war. Any one of the three would be an excellent choice in this category.

It is important to choose judges that would strictly interpret the Constitution of the United States. I do not want judges that would make up laws. All the Demcrats fail this test in spades. Mitt Romney is the strongest in this category. John McCain is suspect because of his leadership in the gang of 14. That gang of 14 situation stopped any chance of getting judges voted on  by the Senate. Rudy Giuliani is suspect because of his stance on abortion among other social issues.

Looking at a candidates personal life is also important. Mitt Romney has lead a life with almost no blemishes. John McCain and Rudy Giuliani have had problems with their wives. A man that cannot rule his own house will have trouble ruling the country.

Boiling down all these categories and you get Mitt Romney as the best candidate. Rudy Giuliani would be next. John McCain would be in third place, because you cannot trust him to do the right thing.
